Secretaries are regal in bearing and offer great flexibility with shelves for books or keepsakes peeking out from behind gracious doors, a desk that folds out when you need it and closes to hide your papers when finished plus three large drawers for storage.
The owner of this secretary received it as a gift from her neighbor, a gracious ninety-something woman.
The piece had been well loved and needed a face lift for the owner’s new home.
A creamy off-white shows off the nice lines of the piece and the gray interior color helps to emphasize the grill pattern on the cabinet doors.
I hope the neighbor would approve of the secretary’s new look.
I’m smitten with the Secretary, having painted three of them in the past six months. There is a smaller blue Secretary for sale at The Plaid Rabbit if this inspires you to get one for your home.
Secretaries are charming and are perfect in nearly every room of the house. They just speak to me …
I couldn’t believe my luck when I found this piece at a local thrift store ~ I snapped it up instantly.
I purchased a few quarts of the famed Annie Sloan chalk paint (at $40 a quart) to see what all the fuss was about and used “Greek Blue” on the secretary. It was creamy and easy to use but the price point is steep.
It’s been a long time since I’ve chosen brass over oil rubbed bronze or silver but it looks great against the blue.
I mixed brown glaze with paste wax to slightly darken the piece. If you’d like to see it, please visit The Plaid Rabbit on Mound Street in the Village of East Davenport.
I have the pleasure of working on two secretaries simultaneously ~ one a custom makeover for a client and the other will be available for purchase.

My client is deciding between gray or teal for the inside of the large off-white secretary.
I’m going to paint the inside of the smaller secretary in off-white, although everything else will be in Annie Sloan’s Greek Blue chalk paint.

In the midst of working on these two secretaries, I have four other fun projects I’m juggling.
These are my second and third secretaries to paint. Earlier this year, I painted one featured below that is similar in size to the one painted off-white.
I do love secretaries as they have such great lines and utility.
